Is the UT-Series 1200 laser FDA-approved for pain?

The UT-Series 1200 laser, manufactured by K-Laser USA, was cleared for pain management by the FDA in August 2009.

How long have lasers been used for pain management?

Therapy lasers have been used in Europe for more than 30 years. The FDA cleared the first therapy laser in 2002. The UT-Series laser was first FDA cleared in March 2005, and the current model was FDA cleared in August 2009.

What is the difference between a cold laser and a hot laser?

Lasers that cut, coagulate or debride tissue are called 'hot' lasers because they accomplish their task by the excessive heating of tissue. Biostimulatory lasers work at much lower power densities, producing photochemical reactions in the tissue. They do not produce heat in tissues, and, therefore, were nicknamed 'cold' lasers.

The UT-Series 1200 laser, a Class IV therapy laser, is considered a 'cold' laser with a power output variable from 0.1 to 12watts. At the higher power settings, the patient's surface tissues will be warmed slightly, but not burned.

What are the common podiatry-related conditions treated by the UT-Series 1200 laser?

Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains and other sports injuries, post-surgical pain, pain-related to bunions and other biochemical abnormalities.

What has been your protocol for each condition?

Treatment protocols have been preprogrammed into the UT-Series 1200 laser. There is a button for each podiatric indication. Treatments can range from 3 to 12 treatments.

Will United Therapies provide a technician? Can I train a staff member to treat my patients?

Are there any safety risks associated with the UT-Series 1200 laser therapy? Are there any other risks or side-effects?

All patients, staff and/or observers must wear protective safety glasses during the treatment. The UT-Series 1200, a Class IV laser, is extremely safe provided the treatment is performed by a properly trained professional.

Are you marketing the UT-Series 1200 laser? For what conditions?

Yes, at this time, the UT-Series 1200 laser can be marketed for pain management.
